Versalles

Al principio, la Chateau de Versalles era una simple casa de campo construida por Luís XIII. Más tarde, Luis XIV mandó a su arquitecto hacer del edificio un palacio sin igual, dejando con su legado maravillas como la Galería de los Espejos, la Capilla, la Ópera, los Salones de la Paz y de la Guerra y las habitaciones del rey y de la reina y la Cámara de la Reina, que se conserva tal y como la dejó María Antonieta al abandonar Versalles en 1789. Pero no sólo el interior del Palacio resulta impresionante: los jardines son una verdadera joya con perfectas simetrías, diseños florales, estanques y fuentes distribuidos por doquier.

El Monte de Saint Michel

El Monte de Saint Michel es unos de los monumentos más visitado de Francia junto con la Torre Eiffel, la catedral de Notre Dame o el Sacre Coeur. Éste fue nombrado Patrimonio Mundial por la UNESCO en 1979. Este monte es un islote unido al continente por una carretera y donde se erige un impresionante abadía de elementos góticos y románicos. Ésta se remontaal siglo VII, cuando el arcángel san Miguel se apareció a Abert, obispo de Avranches que fundó aquí un oratorio. Esta abadía ha constituido uno de los lugares de peregrinación más importantes de Francia.

Una vez en la carretera, la visión de la isla es todo un espectáculo, especialmente si la marea está baja y los laterales del Monte se transforman en gigantescos lagos de barro y arenas movedizas que hacen del lugar un sitio único y mágico. Notre Dame Cathedral

The Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris, "Our Lady of Paris", known as Notre Dame, is a beautiful cathedral on the Île de la Cité in Paris. It was built during the 13th century, when Saint Louis VII (the king of France) was ruling the most powerful and faithful kingdom of Europe. Begun in 1163 and mostly completed by 1250, Notre Dame is an important example of French Gothic architecture, sculpture and stained glass.

The Notre Dame Cathedral is the most famous church in Paris and probably it is one of the most magnificent monuments in the world. But the famous cathedral is also an active Catholic church, a place of pilgrimage, and the focal point for Catholicism in France - religious events of national significance still take place here. It is also the most representative style of Gothic building worldwide. Victor Hugo's famous novel featuring the moving characterization of the hunchback, Quasimodo, has served the notoriety of the cathedral well.

Notre-Dame Cathedral suffered deterioration through the centuries, and after the French Revolution it was rescued from possible destruction by Napoleon, who crowned himself emperor of the French in the cathedral in 1804
There are many special characteristics that will help us to identify this monument as Gothic: ogee archways, ribbed vaults, and the wondrous flying buttresses or beautiful Rose windows.

Dating from about 1220, it retains most of its original glass and tracery. The three west portals are perfect examples of early Gothic art. They show scenes from the Last Judgment, the Virgin Mary and from the life of St. Anne. The south and the north transept portals are extraordinarily beautiful, too.

Notre Dame es el ejemplo perfecto de la arquitectura gótica francesa, con sus esculturas y vidrieras.

La cathedral de Notre Dame es una de las iglesias más famosas de París y probablemente, uno de los monumentos más espectaculares del mundo. Sin embargo, la famosa catedral es también una iglesia católica en activo, así como un lugar de peregrinación, y un punto de referencia para el catolicismo en Francia - muchos eventos religiosos de gran importancia nacional tienen lugar en esta iglesia -. Además, se trata del edificio más representativo del estilo gótico del mundo. La famosa novela de Víctor Hugo sobre el Jorobado de Notre Dame, Cuasimodo, ha servido para dar notoriedad a la catedral.

La catedral de Notre Dame ha sufrido un gran deterioro a lo largo de los siglos, y tras la Revolución Francesa, fue rescatada de la posible destrucción de Napoleón, que se nombró emperador de Francia en la catedral en 1804. La planta es casi de cruz griega y la nave del crucero apenas sobresale de la misma.

Hay muchas características especiales que nos ayudarán a identificar a esta iglesia como un monumento gótico: los arcos apuntados, las bóvedas de crucería, los maravillosos arbotantes, los hermosos rosetones con las vidrieras de colores. Consta de cinco naves y un doble deambulatorio dividido en tramos triangulares, con una serie de capillas cuadradas que lo circundan, con lo que resulta un enorme presbiterio. Su ornamentación es riquísima, perfectamente adaptada al marco arquitectónico.

Su privilegiada localización junto al río Sena, (rodeada de preciosos jardines, hacen de la visita de la catedral una experiencia inolvidable para el viajero. Además, se la puede fotografiar desde todos los puentes que cruzan el río, ya que se divisa desde cualquiera de ellos.

Todas y cada una de las fachadas de Notre Dame son realmente preciosas: la cara oeste es la más notable, con sus dos torres de 69 metros de alto, sus tres portales góticos, y el rosetón de una belleza extraordinaria, que data del de 1.220 y aún conserva la mayor parte de su tracería y vidrio original . En la parte oeste se encuentra también la torre más alta que alberga la famosa campana "Emmanuel”. Los tres portales de la fachada oeste son perfectos ejemplos del arte gótico de los primeros tiempos. En ellos se muestran escenas del Juicio Final, de la Virgen María y de la vida de Santa Ana. Los portales de los cruceros norte y sur tienen portales extraordinariamente hermosos también. El exterior consigue crear un perfecto equilibrio entre la línea horizontal y la vertical, tanto porque las torres que flanquean la fachada rematan en terraza, como porque al impulso ascensional de los portales se opone la horizontal dibujada por la galería de Reyes.

El interior es tan impresionante como el exterior, especialmente el pasillo central y el altar.

The Madrid Jazz Festival Celebrates Its "Silver Wedding"

Madrid gets decked out to host the XXV Jazz Festival anniversary. It will start on 30th October, and will extend until 29th November. The three best double-bassists in the World (Stanley Clark, Marcus Miller y Victor Wooten) will open the Festival with a special concert at the Joy Eslava venue.

There are 17 foreseen concerts: 15 will take place in the Fernan Gómez Theatre and the other 2 in the Real Theatre; in addition to the Joy Eslava concerts and those in the Carlos Amberes Foundation, the Nicolás Salmerón Cultural Centre and the 17 other clubs gathered together for La Noche en Vivo Association. At this year's edition, the Festival counts on a wide musical and cinematographic programme.

As usual, the Fernan Gómez Theatre will be the principal venue of the Festival. It will host such important artists as Richard Galiano and Gonzalo Rubalcaba; Omara Portuondo together with Martirio and Jorge Drexler; Arturo Sandoval, or the first flamenco big band (the Perico Sambeat Flamenco Big Band). On the other hand, Antonio Serrano and Ivan Lins will inaugurate the Guirau Hall on 4th November. It will also play host to the vocal band Take 6 and the vocalists Laika Fatien and Kurt Elling, together with Laurence Hobgood, Clark Sommers y Ulises Owens Jr.

Some very famous people such as Chucho and Bebo Valdés will be playing at the Real Theatre. They'll present some of their latest works: "Siempre Juntos". Dianne Reeves (winner of four Grammys for 'the best jazz vocalist') and Barry Harris (one of the biggest talents in bebop style) will play in this theatre too. Both concerts will be able to count on some special scenery, designed by Erich Wonder.

According to the Arts Delegate, Alicia Moreno, the Jazz Festival aims to extend the Jazz music throughout the city and spread its contagiousness among the citizens of Madrid.

In addition, the Live Music Concert Halls Association (La Noche en Vivo), will offer up to 250 concerts distributed among 17 concert halls, such as the Café Central, the Clamores concert hall, the Segundo Jazz or the Berlín Café.

Finally, the Carlos de Amberes Foundation and the Cultural Centre Nicolás Salmerón join the Festival as the new headquarters of this edition. They will show a cinema and jazz music cycle with a special programme based on the American filmmaker John Cassavetes and another one based on the movies in which the composer George Delerue took part.

El Festival de Jazz de Madrid celebra sus “Bodas de Plata”

Madrid se viste de largo para celebrar el XXV Aniversario del Festival de Jazz de la capital, que comenzará el próximo 30 de octubre y se alargará hasta el 29 de noviembre. Los tres mejores contrabajistas del mundo (Stanley Clark, Marcus Miller y Victor Wooten) abrirán el festival con un concierto en la sala Joy Eslava, a los que se unirán otras dieciséis ofertas jazzísticas.

De entre los 17 conciertos previstos, 15 se celebrarán en el Teatro Fernán Gómez y otros dos en el Teatro Real, además de los de la Sala Joy Eslava y otros añadidos en la Fundación Carlos de Amberes, en el centro cultural Nicolás Salmerón y en los 17 clubes reunidos en torno a la Asociación La Noche en Vivo. Además, se realizará una amplia programación musical y cinematográfica paralela.

Como viene siendo habitual, el Fernán Gómez será la sede principal del festival y recibirá a artistas de la talla de Richard Galiano y Gonzalo Rubalcaba; Omara Portuondo junto a Martirio y Jorge Drexler; Arturo Sandoval, o a la primera big band flamenca: Perico Sambeat Flamenco Big Band. Por otra parte, Antonio Serrano e Ivan Lins pondrán el broche inaugural en la Sala Guirau el 4 de noviembre. También destacan otras voces como la del grupo vocal Take 6, o los vocalistas Laika Fatien y Kurt Elling, acompañados por Laurence Hobgood, Clark Sommers y Ulises Owens Jr.

Por si fuera poco, la asociación de salas de música en directo, La Noche en Vivo, ofrecerá hasta 250 actuaciones repartidas entre las diecisiete salas participantes, como en el Café Central, la Sala Clamores, el Segundo Jazz o el Berlín Café.

Por último, la Fundación Carlos de Amberes y el Centro Cultural Nicolás Salmerón se unen este año como nuevas sedes y ofrecen una aproximación entre el cine y el jazz en el programa 'Música y cine', donde se podrá ver un ciclo del cineasta norteamericano John Cassavetes y otro de las películas en las que participó el compositor George Delerue.
