Paris and its Surrealism

Posted by paris | paris | Wednesday 18 November 2009 1:21 pm

Are you familiar with the images of an eye cut by a blade, the back of a woman that looks like a violin, strange collages or poems without any sense? The Centre Pompidou in paris presents an exceptional exhibition (until 11th of January 2010) : “The subversion of images: surrealism, photo, film”. Beaubourg, the third most visited place in Paris after the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, exhibits over 400 works of surrealists, divided into nine room in this impressive building built by the Italian Renzo Piano. Take a walk in the charming neighboorhoods of Les Halles and Le Marais and enter into this avant-garde centre, invaded by the surrealists…

paris surrealism

It has been almost 80 years since a revolutionary and innovative art movement was born in Paris: Surrealism. The horrors of the First World War reflected into the minds of these artists: the art was pure, subversive, provocative and non-conventional. There was no reason or logic, they looked only for the beauty and truthful meaning of dreams, women, nude, love, the unusual, chance… the unconscious. Immediately appeared photographs, short films and all types of publications whose contents propose a change of heart …

The exhibition presents unknown works, photomontages, publications in magazines and books, group photos and much more. Did you know that the erotic and absurd humor of Surrealism and its de-construction of real life were a great source of inspiration for the advertising companies in the ’20s and ’30s? For example, the famous female face with tears of pearls by Man Ray was used to promote a mascara. Paul Eluard, Antonin Artaud, Hans Bellmer, Claude Cahun, Raoul Ubac, Jacques-André Boiffard, Maurice Tabard and Luis Buñuel are some of the other artists. Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to discover the talent of the Surrealists and start seeing things differently …

Still not convinced about the quality and importance of this exhibition? Take a look at the presentation video on the website of the Centre Pompidou. A avant-goût of the fascinating surrealist universe that will make you want to leave for Paris tomorrow.

Going down one of those blue stairs at the Beaubourg, and keep your eyes open because you can see up to Montmartre! Once outside, discover the neighborhood with it’s street performers, the shops and stores and its charming restaurants and brasseries. You have until Jan. 11 to visit “The subversion of images: surrealism, picture, film”.

Why not organize a trip to Paris with Surrealism as a theme? It will be a lot of fun… But you’ll need a touch of rationality: a cheap and comfortable accommodation to dream like an artist! Rent the best apartments in Paris, the city where new artforms are born.
