The Venice International Film Festival, known as La Mostra, celebrates this year its 66th edition. Although it is an annual festival, it is organized by the Venice Biennale and will run from 2nd to 12th September 2009.

There the 23 movies competing to obtain the awaited Gold Lion have been made public, as well as the name of the new president of the jury, the famous Taiwanese director Ang Lee, who has won two Gold Lions with Desire and Danger and Brokeback Mountain. Besides Lee, the jury will count with Sandrine Bonnaire, Liliana Cavani, Joe Dante, Anurag Kashyap and Luciano Ligabue.

The awards include the Golden Lion for best film, the Silver Lion for the best director, the Special Jury Award, the Volpi Cups for the best actor and actress, the Marcello Mastroianni Award for the best young actor and actress, and The Osella Award for the best technical support and the best screenplay.

This year a new section called Controcampo Italiano will be realized. It will focus on the latest trends of the Italian cinema with seven fiction and non-fiction productions.

Italy is the country with the highest number of films submitted to the Festival, followed by the United States. The movie “Baaría”, by Giuseppe Tornatore will open this year’s edition and the science-fiction film “Chengdo, wu ai ni”, by Fruit Chan and the rock star Cui Jian will close it. Among others, the works “A Single Man” by Tom Ford and “Capitalis: A Love Story” by Michael Moore will be present.

Out of contest will participate Oliver Stone with “South of the Border”, and two Spanish works, “REC 2″, by Paco Plaza and Jaume Balagueró and “Mudanza” by Pere Portabella in the Horizons section. Due to the huge success the 3D cinema is enjoying, the prestigious Venice Film Festival will award for the first time this year the best three-dimensional film, opening a new category for this type of production. Nine movies will compete for the prize: “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs”, “Monsters vs. Aliens” and “Up”, among others.

Another novelty is the Golden Lion for the Career. For the first time it will be given to the animated cinema: the director and American producer John Lasseter will receive the September 6th, together with the other directors of the Disney-Pixar, the prestigious award after the presentation of “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2.” To close, The Mostra will also reward Sylvester Stallone the “Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker Award”.

Even the great Festival of Venice has not been able to escape the financial crisis plaguing the world, and this edition will be marked by many protests against the cuts that Berlusconi has made in the cinema and entertainment world.
