“Photography is a small voice, at best, but sometimes one photograph, or a group of them, can lure our sense of awareness”. That quotation by American photojournalist, war photographer and artist [1918 – 1978] highlights some of the forces of reportage photography: its value as a historical document for information and power to change the looks and the realities. For the fifth consecutive year, the Centre for Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (CCCB) presents the World Press Photo 09, an important event that makes us aware of current affairs around the world. Another event you can not miss is the FotoPres09 at Caixa Forum, where you will have another opportunity to reflect on contemporary society and its conflicts.

Today, being a press photographer is a way to not only portray the world crisis, the conflict in Georgia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Venezuela and Kenya, the tsunami in Burma, immigration, social inequality, gender violence but also the most unusual and poetic realities of this world. Other things are changes in sexual behaviour in our society, the faces of some athletes at the Tokyo Olympics, an intimate Barack Obama, luxury and many other things never before seen. The talent of some of these professional photojournalists will leave you speechless.

This year shows the amazing work of Spanish photojournalist Emilio Morenatti which won the FotoPres 09 first prize. Along with eight other professionals, nine portraits of Pakistani women victims of gender violence will be exhibited: they have been disfigured by an acid attack. Some were operated on up to 25 times, some of them dream of regaining their sight or just to have a decent education. These women posed with great courage in front of the camera, dressed in colour on a neutral background to denounce what they are going through. Marta Ramoneda, Morenatti’s companion, shows us another reality in the Pakistani society: the world of transsexuals. The work of Argentine Walter Astrada won him second prize with the violence in Kenya, Alfonso Moral - third prize with the Lebanese conflict, Mikel Aristregi - alcoholism in Mongolia and Lourdes R. Basoli for the situation in Caracas, Venezuela. Those professionals who were “here and now” either received scholarships or were awarded for these images whose main goal is to raise awareness about the realities of our world.

The World Press Photo 09 exhibition shows the 200 winning entries in the first annual international competition in press photography. Nearly 6,000 professional photojournalists submitted their work for the competition, originating from 124 countries along with some 100,000 images. The exhibition will tour 100 cities around the world. Do not forget to visit FotoPres09 with its 135 stunning photos that will occupy room 2 of the Caixa Forum until 21 February. This is also an event not to be missed.

Vampires, beyond the hype

Vampires are in vogue, thanks to the popular ‘Twilight’ series, the TV show ‘True Blood’ and movies like ‘Jennifer’s Body’ with Megan Fox. Thousands of teenage girls dream about being bitten by Eduard Cullen, but the modern image of the vampire has nothing to do with old legends. A vampire was an un-dead, a bloodthirsty dangerous creature that had nothing to do with romantic love stories!

Stories about creatures who feed on human blood are as old as mankind itself. Especially in the Slavic culture, we find a lot of myths relating to vampires. Long before Bram Stoker wrote his famous work ‘Dracula’, the people of Eastern Europe already feared the ‘Upyr’ or ‘Moroi’. There are reports of people being bitten by giant bats, and the dead rising from their graves. Not so surprising, they didn’t have too much medical knowledge about the human body and if you didn’t breathe you were considered dead. Also, these ‘dead’ were buried as soon as possible out of fear of diseases. And more than once these victims turned out to be still alive and kicking!

There existed real vampire hunters, who opened up the graves if people suspected vampirism. Often they found corpses with fresh blood on them, whose hair and nails didn’t stop growing. This was seen as a clear sign of vampirism, thus a stake was hammered through the heart and sometimes the body was burned. The explanation is simple: people who were buried alive and woke up in a coffin, tried by all means to dig themselves out. Sometimes it could take quite some time before they actually died, and only a few were lucky enough to ‘rise’ from their grave (only to be murdered by a vampire hunter).

In Serbia for example, there was a true mass hysteria after the death of a certain Arnold Paole. He claimed to have been bitten on a trip through Kosovo, but he said he cured himself by eating the earth from the vampire’s grave. But after his death (he fell off a hay wagon and broke his neck), some villagers died in suspicious circumstances. They opened up his graved and pierced his heart, which began to bleed. Later they burned the corpse.

Then there is also the story of the Hungarian countess Elisabeth Báthory, remembered as the ‘Blood Countess’, who was the biggest serial killer in history. She lived in the 16th century and supposedly killed more then 500 young girls. She derived pleasure from torturing them, but her main goal was to bathe in their blood. The countess believed this would preserve her youth and beauty.

The former “I’ll call you later” has been transformed into a “Hey, let’s skype this afternoon, ok?”. Meanwhile the so called hot buttons are flooding our television programme with game shows presented by scantily-clad beautiful women or hyperactive men. Nowadays, we spend all day long downloading programmes, or making backups of our computer systems. And don’t get frightened when you see a hysterical person screaming “Oh my god, they’ve Googled me”. Welcome to the 21st century!

The Google imperium isn’t just the most used searching engine within the cyber world, but it also gives us very useful information about different cultures and behaviours of the many countries spread out through the whole planet. Yet for a long time Google offers a special function for investigating the most searched words, divided into different categories, countries, regions and time periods. What is the secret of becoming famous? The talk on the street! As long as magazines write about you and websites publish your photos, people talk about you. Whether it’s good or bad it doesn’t matter so much just as long as they talk. Marilyn Manson must have heard this phrase a thousand times before, because nobody causes as much controversy as he does. He comes to Barcelona on Friday 4th December, where he will perform at the Olympic Stadium and show the people what a good party really is.

For more then 15 years he’s been terrorizing the masses with his style, his songs and his controversial comments. But does that mean that he is a descendant of Satan and what’s more, a danger to our society? A lot of people criticize him, others adore him and some just ignore him because they think he is too extreme. Fact is that nothing he does goes unnoticed. “They can’t destroy me just because I have a different opinion’ he said in an interview with filmmaker Michael Moore.

This 4th of December he will be accompanied by Twiggy Ramirez, who used to be part of his old band. Together with Ginger Fish (drums), Tim Skold (guitar), Chris Vrenna (keyboard) and Rob Holliday (guitar) they will set Barcelona on fire.

Actually, what do you know about Marilyn Manson? His birth name is a lot less scary, since in real life he is called Brian Hugh Warner. For his stagename he was inspired by Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson, “to symbolize the dualism in the American society”. The guys jumping, sliding on their four wheels boards, sometimes can really surprise and almost dazzle us with their acrobatics. In Barcelona, one of the capitals of skateboard, there are dozens of places where it is possible to practice this sport: large squares, streets with suitable pavements, stairs, ramps, and benches. Get closer to this universe and you will discover the magic of the skateboard world.

In Barcelona it doesn’t often rain and the weather is fine for most of the months. For these reasons it sounds like a utopia and a bit unrealistic to set limits to street skateboard. The first open air skate-park was opened in California in 1976. Nowadays the skateboarders catch on very quickly and they come from all around the world to skate in Barcelona. And they are right! Barcelona seems to be a kind of magnet for the skaters, an ideal scenery where to practice without being afraid of nasty fines.

There you’ll see your limbs torn and broken for all eternity…That’s where anger is vented. This is an “inordinate appetite for revenge,” according to Christianity.

Of the 7 deadly sins, anger is the worst because it triggers all the other vices (lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, envy, pride). It is related to the failures, frustrations and conflicts of each person and it can lead to murder, crimes of passion and physical violence, etc. Therefore, anger is the sin that kills.

Anger is a non-controlled feeling of hatred and anger. It is the only sin that is not necessarily related to egoism and self-interest (although one can have anger about selfishness, or jealousy). Psychology has much work to do about it, because the energy control is not easy. The best thing is to use this pain to strengthen our character, preferring the patience and the reflection.
