Besides this huge variety of extraordinary records, the media and press leave us speechless each day because of the numerous pieces of freaky news from all over the world. Malaga is a beautiful city that has preserved its Phoenician magic. The cathedral is one of the great jewels of the city. It was founded by Ferdinand and Isabella after the Andalusian conquest. This was built over the Great Mosque. The people from Malaga have affectionately nicknamed it “la manquita” (one-handed) because the second tower is half built and slightly tilted. It took more than two centuries to build, so it enjoys a mix of different architectural styles – Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque.

Another of its architectural wonders is the Roman Amphitheatre, one of the oldest monuments in the city. It was built in the second century before Christ and accidentally discovered during some excavations.

The Alcazaba is, however, the most important Arab monument in the city. It was the royal palace of the Nazarenes and its construction began in the eleventh century. Today it houses the Provincial Archaeological Museum.

Other monuments and landmarks include the Renaissance Palace of Bellavista, which houses the Picasso Museum; the Mesón de la Victoria hostel, which houses the folk museum; the Aduana Palace, the Botanic Garden or the birthplace and home of Pablo Picasso.

Another custom was to put a skeleton on the windowsill, to represent the deceased, which explains why now we decorate our houses.

From 24th October until 4th November, spirits and evil ghosts will find their way to Parc Asterix and they are up to no good. For the first time an exclusive women’s art collection is being shown in the Pompidou Centre in Paris. This is a presentation dedicated to female artists from the twentieth century up to the present day. The exhibition began on 18th September and it will end in May 2010. The Pompidou Centre thus brings together the most important female collections of modern and contemporary art in Europe.

The institution, which has been able to organize this first European exhibition of modern and contemporary art, has established a unique commitment with female artists of different nationalities and disciplines, making this high cultural level event possible. Thanks to this exhibition the world has the opportunity to discover these incredible women, their way of life and especially their art.

In a world marked by injustice and social differences; a world where poverty, hunger and lost causes prevail, it seems that there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Every day the media bombards us with headlines such as: “Taliban under  attack in area where US soldiers killed”, “Suicide bomb hits UN in Pakistan”, “Taiwan evacuates over 6000 as typhoon lingers”… and so on. In what kind of crazy world are we living?

Fortunately, not everything is so bad. There are more and more conscious people with the idea of building a better world, where hunger, wars, inequalities or diseases do not have a place on this planet. Hence, there arose in Spain some years ago a great initiative to fight against the breast cancer, the Women’s Race or Carrera de la Mujer, which is now celebrated in 8 Spanish cities: Málaga, Valencia, Madrid, Gijón, Vitoria, Seville, Barcelona and Zaragoza.

The registration price is €6, one of which is a donation to the AECC (Spanish Association Against Cancer), and will go entirely to the fight against breast cancer. The participants run 5km through the city centre and they receive a very special gift for their participation: a race T-shirt.

Women have been involved so much in this good cause that the race has enjoyed the support of more than 30,000 female participants in these months of 2009. The last race was held on 4th October in Seville and had 3812 participants. Soon the last two races of 2009 will be celebrated in Barcelona and Zaragoza – on October 25th and November 15th, respectively. Both hope to have the same or more success than its sister races in other cities. But Madrid beat all the records in its 2008 edition, where they counted with near 12.000 participants, followed by Barcelona with 6.500.

And what better way to fight for a good cause than with exercise? After the 5km run, there will be an aerobics festival where girls can continue doing sports.

The National Reina Sofia Art Centre will host on 13th and 14th of November the HyperSounds, a series of concerts, DJ sessions, screenings and lectures concerning the sonorous investigation. The best national and international artists will meet in the Spanish capital to experiment with all the possibilities that sound can offer.

The event will be held in five different spaces, divided between the Sabatini building, the Conference Room 3A, that will host the works of Edwin van der Heide; the Nouvel building for concerts, DJ sessions, presentations and projections and the Auditorium 400, where the sound experimentation will be shown through different expressions and musical languages.

Close to 20 activities will be presented: they highlight the DJ sessions as Rustie and Mary Anne Hobbs, the directs of Various Production, Tender Forever and Shit & Shine, and two sound installations by the artist Edwin van der Heide. On the other hand, the most outstanding national artists will be the star in the Nouvel Café sessions. Great examples are Medialab Prado and the Music Technology Group from the Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona.

Other names to stand out are Svreca, Annie Hall or HD Substance, plus a special guests arrived from London:s Rustie with his mix of hip-hop beats and wonky beats, and Mary Anne Hobbs, muse of the more experimental post-dubstep sounds.

On the other hand, the programming will be completed with the premiere of the movie “Amplified Gesture”, documentary that accompanies ‘Manafon‘, the new album of the British musician and ex member of 80’s group Japan, David Sylvian.

The public can toggle between scheduled specific concerts, installations, performances, screenings, etc. In addition, all the HyperSounds activities are totally free.

The Savoyan terrace in the castle of Buda is probably the most beautiful spot in the whole of Budapest. And now you have another reason for climbing the winding streets to the top of the hill: from 8th until 11th of October the castle hosts the Palinka festival.

Palinka is a traditional Hungarian drink, a sort of fruit brandy; and it is only considered authentic if the alcohol percentage is at least 37.5 %. The most popular are ‘Korte Palinka’ made from pears and ‘Szilva Palinka’ made from plums. However, there is a popular Hungarian saying: if you can make marmalade out of it, you can use it to produce Palinka. A lot of older people, usually in small villages, still brew Palinka in their home, although it is forbidden and involves serious health risks.

During the festival, you can taste several hundred varieties of Palinka, coming from fifteen different distilleries. The festival is actually a Jewish tradition, and there will be a lot of experts present for those who want to find out more about the distillation process and traditions.

There are two stages on the site, Nagyszínpad and Kisszínpad. Concerts should start around 4pm, and the last ones start at 10PM. There will be traditional Jewish folk groups like the Vodku Band, as well as popular Hungarian artists like Zuboly, Empty Pubs, Heaven Street 7 (Who released a new album this year) and Takáts Eszter.

Since it is better not to drink on an empty stomach, be sure to visit the stalls of the sausage makers who will sell their homemade products, like Gyulai and Csabai (usually very spicy, with a lot of paparika). The festival is not for free, but  one drink is included in the 7 euro entrance fee as well as a coupon to spend in one of the food stalls.

“Until the end of time…” These word have been pronounced by the majority of Europe’s population, but a lot of them haven’t fulfilled their promise of marriage, because only some years later they heard their lawyers saying: “The marriage is officially divorced”. The European Union isn’t only a community of 27 member states, it is as well the best example of a Union of divorces. The current divorce rate in Europe breaks all records. Uncountable psychologists and anthropologists are trying to find an answer to this phenomenon referring to our first human ancestors, the Homo sapiens.

According to a study elaborated by the Institute for Family Policies almost one million marriages are ending in divorce each year. If we consider this figure in more detail, this would mean that every 33 seconds a couple in Europe gets separated. These are alarming figures because over the last 25 years the divorce rate has increased over 50%. So, it is not surprising that there are less Europeans who have the courage to marry his or her mate. And if they dare to walk up the altar, then they decide to take this important step very late: according to official studies, the average age of women getting married is about 28,2 years and the age of men 30 years.

Although the Mediterranean Europeans are in the group of the most desired women and men according to finding the perfect partner in life, it seems like that in the southern countries of Europe divorces are the new trend: over the last 25 years the divorces in Portugal has increased by over 89%, followed by Italy with 62% and Spain with an average of 59%. Meanwhile in Germany marriages last about 10,4 years, the married couples in Cyprus are fighting with the seven year itch.

Everyone is trying desperately to find the reason for this huge divorce rate in Europe. Is it the fault of the financial crisis, the globalization, climate change or society? Numerous experts think about that matter in a different way and relate it to the first human ancestors. The genetic make-up of the homo-sapiens shows us that they were completely unprepared for a lifelong relationship. The homo-sapiens stayed with their partners for almost four years, enough time for bringing up their children. A lot of experts defend this point of view: the unique biological reason to be with his partner is because of the offspring. According to science, to be in love with someone is only a kind of motivation system of the brain and a normal human drive.

However, every one of us should find his personal answer to this phenomenon. Nevertheless, experts give us the advice to try to trick our brain so that our organism transmits more dopamine, noradrenaline and serotonin (hormones which control the well-being, feelings of happiness, etc.).

Don’t let your decision be swayed by the high divorce rate and show Europe that you are capable of living with your partner until the end of time. About 20 years ago the first gay bars appeared in Seville, specifically in the Alameda de Hercules. The Itaca club was one of the pioneers (Amor de Dios Street, 31). Now it is the most famous gay nightclub in the city. It has two different floors: the first one has the dance floor, while the second has a video room, a darkroom and some cabins. This floor is only for men! In addition, every Wednesday there is a live show. For those who prefer something quieter they can go to Café Central (Alameda de Hercules, 64), a nice and quiet café ideal for having a drink in the evening or a weekend breakfast. For the girls the perfect place is the Noveccento (Julio Cesar, 10). As they used to say: “Few places are as versatile as the Noveccento in Seville. There you can have a coffee, see a photo exposition or go to a party.” Without a doubt it is a bar where good music and the best female atmosphere of the city prevail.

In the Arenal district there are some gay bars with many years of history. The most famous is the Isbiliyya bar (Paseo de Colón, 2), with a very pleasant and crowded terrace. Every Thursday and Sunday there is a fun drag-queen show.

Close by there is the Flamingo Lounge which is undoubtedly the most chic club in the city that celebrates the most modern parties of the gay world in the city.

Finally, the Alfalfa district is another gay meeting point in Seville. Among its legendary bars there are the Alfalfa 10, the famous Garlochi cocktail bar and the gay clubs frequented by students and tourists along Pérez Galdós. In addition, there is a gay gym, a gay library, and a tapas bar called Sopa de Ganso.

Now let’s think about the preferences of both tourists and locals, what are the differences?

Starting with culture and arts, what can we say about their museums? You have to admit that the Catalan capital can be proud of some important venues like the Picasso or Dalí museum, La Pedrera and the National Art museum of Catalonia (MNAC). But these cannot beat the most prestigious museum in all of Spain and one of the best in Europe: The Prado. Madrid is fortunate to have one of the most significant art museums in the world today. Other examples are the Queen Sofia and the Thyssen-Bornemisza museums. Without a doubt, the first point goes to Madrid!

Moving on to their architecture, we don’t have to tell you that the roots of modernism lie in Barcelona, thanks to Antoni Gaudí and his friends. Wandering through the enchanting streets of the city centre and by chance running into a building straight from a fairy tale… This is only possible in Barcelona. Goooaaaaaal! That’s one goal a piece!

Considering the people of both cities, opinions differ. While they say that madrilènes are more arrogant, posh and proud, Barcelonans are considered to be mean Catalan extremists. But we are not going to talk about these prejudiced stereotypes. Like in every place around the world, you have people of all kinds, so this one’s a tie!

The list of comparable items seems endless: starting with the parks, the Parque del Retiro or Parque Guell, passing onto the typical food, cocido madrilñeño or pa amb tomàquet to geography, mountains or beach.

The 3rd of October is in most countries a totally normal day, but not in Germany. Berlin is the perfect example for a city which has experienced one of the most important events in world history. After the Second World War Germany was divided into four occupation zones controlled by the American, French, British and Soviet allies. Berlin was also split up into four zones, with the aim that the allies should cooperate in controlling the country. Nevertheless numerous conflicts caused the beginning of what we know as the Cold War. Therefore, all the area occupied by the Soviets, except West Berlin, was turned into the German Democratic Republic (GDR), while the other occupied zones were unified as the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). So in 1949 began the division of the country.

The years of division between East and West Germany were marked by dramatic conflicts and terrible political strategies. The GDR introduced a communist system, which was believed to be based on a kind of social market economy, but it was the same as the Soviet Union; a totally planned economy. While the FRG was enjoying the famous economic miracle of the 50’s the economical growth in East Germany was remarkably lower than the development in West Germany. Nevertheless the GDR was considered the richest country in the whole Eastern bloc.

After long years of division and many dreadful incidents, the country managed, with the strong support from many politicians and also due to good luck and a few coincidences, to reach the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9th November 1989 and at last the Unity of East and West Germany on the 3rd of October 1990. Therefore those days are considered as one of the most important dates in world history.
